The Dickens family moved from Bayham Street to another, recently built, premises at 4 Gower Street North (later renumbered 147 Gower Street) on 26 December 1823.

However, soon after moving to Gower Street North, on 20 February 1824 John Dickens was arrested for non-payment of debts and taken to the Marshalsea Prison where he subsequently resided with his family with the exception of Charles.
